5 easy drawing inspirations for beginners

Drawing has always been a big part of my life. It is a great hobby and helps you getting lost in an unique flow. The more you practice it, the faster you will get lost in the state of being in the moment. It is kind of like meditation or yoga.

So take a pen and paper and let's get started!

1. cherry

Take a cherry, set in on a plate (or not, doesn't really matter) and firtstly try to define its shape. May sound super easy, but trust me, it really isn't. Only with practise you will get the hang of it.

Getting the shape of objects you try to capture is a fundamental skill for artists. You may have come across these basic structures/skeleton-like sketches of professionals. It's a rather simple tool to simplify later on more complex refrences or generally compositions.

For the beginning it is not important to add some detail, but you can if you like that.

Put the cherry in an other position (e.g upside down) and redo the process. Repeat that for about four to five times.

Go ahead and take a pen in your hand.

By the way, you can also choose an other fruit or vegetable with an easy shape (e.g apple, watermelon slice, carrot, tomato)

2. calla

Now, hear me out! I choose a flower because they have some asymmetrical shapes, soft edges and lots of details (most of them). Don't get overwhelmed by the details though, because they are not important right now.

Do the same as with the cherry, capture its shape! Here we even have some wavy edges and overlapping spaces. Feel free to add some details or make some intuitive shading.

If you are tired of just drawing shapes, then try to trace the lines of fibres within the calla and fill in the blank shape.

You can also try to begin with drawing the fibers and find its shape by that. There are numerous way to experience the same reference by your creative hand.

By doing this exercise you learn to literally feel into drawing

You can also pick another flower or just leaves.

3. sand dunes

If you like landscapes and mysterious vibes as the objective, sand dunes are for you! Those easy lines and nice contrast between light and dark. There are not even much details or shapes to figure out. So come on, let your imagination roll!

Your hand will get the hang of it very soon. Here I want you to keep it minimalistic, because adding to much details in the background can confuse the viewers eye. Therefore: lines, shading and basta!

By drawing simple sceneries you can learn to determine the mood of your composition. You may need it to make various things, such as covers, paintings, designs ecc.

I for example like to draw first the background and then add some little figures in it to create a feeling of vastness and space.

4. your favourite (2D) character

yes, there are some really complex examples of character designs, but I want you to draw what you like. On top of that you can even learn how other artists simplify realistic things. Every style has an uniqueness, as every personality has. By the way you don't need to draw the whole character, just a detail is also enough.

If you're not really into 2D character, then try capturing some real faces. In the end it doesn't matter that much, to be honest.

I remember an art teacher of mine was strictly against drawing from drawings, but I don't think it's a bad thing, because it can help one to realize own mistakes.

It is what you like that makes you stick onto it.

5. spoon

This list gets even more random as we progress.

Here we have a special material, considering it as a metallic spoon. I know you got the hang of drawing shapes and all, but now I challange you to shade. Take a spoon and firstly observe the shadows and lights. Which ones are lighter? Which ones are darker? Where does the light come from?

Metallic objects are a bit difficult to capture, especially with reflections. But you will soon begin to enjoy those details.

If you chose a plastic spoon or a wooden spoon, also great! It's about learning shadows.

If you feel ready, take some more spoons and lay them down randomly for a more complex composition. Don't freak out, you will get into it!

lastly...

As a beginner it is not important to get all the detail, because it can be frustrating. I know, because I was there too. And keep in mind, that you need time to bloom. In todays days we want to see all fast results, which leaves something really important behind...the love to do something. I hope I could help you anyhow with this little list.
